POLICY: Proposed Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) (Scotland) Bill
RCN Scotland supports the intention behind the proposed Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) (Scotland) Bill. While we have not received a significant number of representations from members who feel threatened by protests at sites, we strongly support the principle that staff and services users should be able to access sites without any impediment or fear.

The consultation acknowledges that the ‘PPE required to prepare for any future pandemic could differ and will be decided upon in line with expert clinical guidance’ but does not ask any lessons learned questions about this, despite it being is as important a matter as supply.

New Foundations: the future of NHS trust providers
In February 2010 the Royal College of Nursing surveyed members in England working in NHS foundation trusts. The aim was to build a snapshot picture of our members’ opinions about their trusts to help us understand how foundation trusts are performing in the following areas: engaging with patients, local communities and staff to design services and shape strategy: using their greater independence; and helping nurses to deliver the highest quality of care. This briefing contains the results of this survey.

Beyond any consultation on guidance and standards for local services; the MWC should also consult on the further detail of how its new role will operate, as that detail is developed. This detail will be crucial in enabling the RCN, and other stakeholders, to offer a robust view on whether the process will be operable in practice, and any challenges that may arise as a result of it.

POLICY: Proposed Drugs Death (Prevention) (Scotland) Bill
RCN members debated and subsequently passed a resolution at our 2022 Congress which called on RCN Council to lobby the UK Government to support the introduction of safer injecting facilities across the UK. RCN Scotland therefore supports any attempts to introduce overdose prevention centres in Scotland.
