Nominations are now open for members to put themselves forward for election to nine seats on the RCN’s governing Council. Elections are taking place in the following constituencies:

  • East Midlands
  • Eastern
  • Northern
  • Northern Ireland
  • Nursing Support Workers
  • Scotland
  • South West
  • Wales
  • West Midlands.

Members eligible to put themselves forward for nomination will be emailed today with further details. These are casual vacancies for terms of office ending on 31 December 2023.

Candidates must be nominated by two members in the relevant constituency and, in order to help members vote, should supply a statement of how they meet the qualities, skills and experience required for the role.

RCN Council members are responsible for providing guidance and direction on the vision and strategic aims of the RCN, working with the Executive Team to ensure the RCN achieves its Royal Charter objectives. Council also provides oversight to ensure the organisation operates effectively.

Nominations close on 23 January with voting opening on 1 March if seats are contested. More information can be found on our election pages.

The Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), which took place on 29 November, was called by Council to provide members with an opportunity to discuss the findings of an independent review into the culture of the RCN. The agenda included a vote on a member resolution, which was a question of confidence in RCN Council’s leadership during the period from 2018 to July 2021.

The member resolution, which was advisory, called upon those current and relevant members of Council (during the period from 2018 to July 2021) to resign with immediate effect and not to put themselves forward for future elected roles within the RCN.

Following a related discussion, the resolution was passed with 93% of the members who voted supporting the resolution. See the full result here.
