Scotland's Sheena Martin wins RCN Learning Rep of the Year at Congress 2023

15 May 2023

An RCN member with a passion for learning has had her outstanding contribution as an RCN rep recognised in this year’s RCN awards.

Sheena Martin Congress 23

Sheena Martin, a unit care home manager based in Ayrshire, is this year’s RCN Learning Rep of the Year.

Sheena helps to create a strong learning environment in workplaces, taking the lead in encouraging colleagues to take part in continuous professional development and learning, which in turn leads to a workplace with knowledgeable staff providing high quality care. Sheena has also actively supported members during pay campaigning by sharing information, answering questions and encouraging voting.

On winning the RCN Learning Rep of the Year award at RCN Congress in Brighton yesterday (Sunday 14 May), Sheena said:

“I’m still slightly stunned to have been named RCN Learning Rep of the Year. It’s fantastic to have our efforts recognised in these awards here at Congress, which in many ways is among the best learning events for members in the RCN calendar. To keep learning and developing is so important for nursing staff – I believe that the more help we can all get, the easier it is to stay up to date. I also think it’s even harder for nursing staff working in care homes and social care in general. I get real satisfaction out of helping colleagues get the most out of their work and career in a setting that is rich with expertise and knowledge, with passion and commitment.”

RCN Scotland Director Colin Poolman said:

“Sheena is one of the most passionate people about learning you could meet. She goes above and beyond for her colleagues and is very enthusiastic about the RCN. Sheena selflessly spent her own time helping with the NHS pay campaign despite being employed in the independent sector. She often coordinates learning activities and does rep activities in her own time. It’s this passion and hard work that has made sure learning is high on the agenda wherever she is working and is a fantastic role model for colleagues.”
