Climate Crisis Exhibition: call out for video participation

5 Aug 2024

Would you like to be involved in our new exhibition?

three photos of people putting on medical gloves

The RCN Library and Museum are looking for nursing staff to record a short video of yourself putting on and taking off medical gloves. The footage will be used in a new artwork exploring nursing and the climate crisis.

As part of the new exhibition, we have commissioned an artist, Louise Ward Morris, to look at the climate crisis in healthcare. The artwork focuses on waste in healthcare and the communication between nurses and patients. Louise will use your videos to make an animation which will be on display from November 2024 at RCN HQ in London. Contributors will be anonymous, and you don’t need to show your face in the video. Everyone is welcome to participate!

We’re also looking for any unwanted mobile phones which will form part of the artwork. If you have an old or broken phone that you no longer need, please use our free postage service to download a label to post to RCN library. It only takes 2 minutes! Please do a full factory reset to wipe all data before you send the phone to us.

Video instructions:
Thank you for taking part in our artwork on nursing and climate change!

We'd love you to share a close-up video of your hands as you put on or take off disposable gloves. The focus is on the movement of your hands. You don't need to record your face or other parts of your body if you don't want to. They will not feature in the artwork.

You will need:
1. Five minutes of free time
2. A quiet space with good lighting
3. A pair of protective gloves, ideally that you have used before or will use later
4. A camera phone
5. A friend, colleague or family member to record the video for you

Instructions:
1. Find a quiet area in your workplace with good lighting
2. Get your gloves
3. Ensure you are not wearing a watch or any rings, with the exception of a plain wedding band or nail varnish
4. Ask your colleague to point the camera at your hands. The camera should be “portrait” or vertical. Your hands should be kept in the centre of the screen at all times.
5. Press record
6. Take your time and slowly put your gloves on, as you would normally when putting on gloves in a health care environment
7. Once you have donned your gloves, show your hands to the camera
8. Take your time and slowly take off your gloves using the usual procedures you’d use when removing gloves in a health care environment.
9. Once they are off, show your hands to the camera
10. Finish recording

How to share your video:

You can send your video to us via social media or email at rcn.library@rcn.org.uk by 9am on Tuesday 27 August.
