Our speaker Angela Pericleous-Smith aims to offer guidance through this seminar on effectively supporting individuals undergoing fertility treatment, regardless of their mental health background.
In England, 1 out of every 6 individuals disclose experiencing anxiety and depression within a week. Similarly, 1 out of every 6 couples face challenges with infertility. The impact of fertility issues on mental health is widely recognized. As healthcare professionals, it is crucial to consider the holistic well-being of individuals, including their mental health. Our speaker Angela Pericleous-Smith aims to offer guidance through this seminar on effectively supporting individuals undergoing fertility treatment, regardless of their mental health background.
Speaker bios:
Angela Pericleous-Smith is Chair of the British Infertility Counselling Association (BICA), counsellor representative for British Fertility Society (BFS) and has specialised in fertility counselling within the NHS and private practice since 2004.
Angela has written and spoken about the emotional impact of infertility and has co-authored BICA Guidelines for Good Practice in Fertility Counselling 4th Ed. 2019 and Counselling in Surrogacy in UK Licensed Centres (2021). Recent research and writing focus on the emotional, physical and psychological impact of infertility in the workplace, Counselling challenges associated with donor conception and surrogacy and Covid-19’s impact on UK counselling provision and patients’ experiences. Angela is driven to improve professional standards in fertility counselling, the psychological support, provision and accessibility of information and fair treatment for patients.
Buki Fatuga, chair of this seminar, is a registered adult Nurse, Midwife, and Nurse Prescriber, has over 6 years of experience in the fertility field. Throughout her career, Buki has been dedicated to self-improvement and professional development. Her primary focus as a nurse/midwife has always been on enhancing patient experience and ensuring quality care. Buki is committed to maintaining consistency within the patient pathway to achieve these goals. She joined the committee to promote best practices in fertility and empower fertility nurses by advocating for emotional support and well-being. Buki Prides herself in ensuring that humanity remains at the heart of what we do.
