What is anticipatory grief, and how healthcare professionals can support individuals

13 May 2025, 08:00 - 08:45

  • Room 3A, Exhibition Centre Liverpool, King's Dock, Port of Liverpool, Liverpool, L3 4FP
Submitted by the Older People’s Forum in collaboration with the Pain and Palliative Care Forum

This session will explore anticipatory grief—the grief experienced before the death of a loved one, particularly when caring for someone with a terminal illness such as cancer or dementia. Health care professionals, especially those working in palliative, community, older people’s care, emergency units, and GP practices, will benefit from understanding how anticipatory grief manifests and how to support individuals in these situations. The session will cover the importance of recognising anticipatory grief, offering appropriate support to both the individual and their family, and helping the caregiver continue their role effectively. By doing so, patients can remain at home longer, if desired, and caregivers can help ensure a ‘good death.’ Evidence-based content will be shared, with references provided. Participants will learn to identify and support those experiencing anticipatory grief, improving care for those with life-limiting conditions and their families.
