U=U in people living with HIV

13 May 2025, 12:45 - 13:30

Submitted by the Dumfries and Galloway Branch

The U=U campaign aims to change the narrative surrounding HIV. Over 113,000 people live with HIV across the UK. Despite advancements in treatment, stigma still affects people living with HIV (PLWH). Research shows many PLWH are unaware of the U=U message outside specialist care. Endorsed by the British HIV Association (BHIVA), U=U (undetectable = untransmittable) confirms that individuals with undetectable viral loads cannot sexually transmit HIV, normalising the condition, reducing stigma, and empowering PLWH. This session promotes a widespread campaign to educate health professionals and the public on U=U, aiming to reduce stigma, shame, and misconceptions about HIV. It will benefit the entire health and social care workforce, providing evidence-based insights on how to apply the U=U message to change attitudes. Delegates will leave with an understanding of U=U, learn how to reduce stigma, and how to change the narrative around HIV.
