Royal College of Nursing responds to Prime Minister's speech
Responding to the Prime Minister's speech at the Conservative Party Conference, Royal College of Nursing Chief Nurse, Professor Nicola Ranger, said: “The Prime Minister’s plans for the NHS are at risk of being derailed by the nurse shortage he is still not addressing. After giving nurses the worst pay deal in the public sector, they will also be questioning tonight why they are being left out of the bonus scheme now being offered to others too. Nurses need to become a priority for government investment if the Prime Minister hopes to turnaround the record number of unfilled nurse jobs."

Royal College of Nursing Deputy Director for Nursing, Dr Nichola Ashby, said: “The Royal College of Nursing has long advocated for a loan forgiveness scheme for nursing staff to boost recruitment and retention to the public sector nursing workforce. Many people choose to become a nurse so that they can help care for some of the sickest and most vulnerable people in our society – and it is wrong that they should be saddled with, on average, almost £50,000 of debt."

Royal College of Nursing and Active Care Group sign partnership learning agreement
The learning and development of nursing staff working in the independent sector took a step forward today with a new partnership between the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and Active Care Group. The two organisations have signed a partnership learning agreement which will support the creation of up to ten RCN learning representative roles at Active Care Group.

Royal College of Nursing responds to fall in nursing courses acceptance rate
RCN Deputy Director for Nursing, Dr Nichola Ashby, said: “The UK Government has stumbled at the first hurdle of their NHS Workforce Plan, with 12% fewer people expected to take up nursing courses this year in England. These numbers are not just a sad story for today, but a story for years to come of how the ministers baked future nursing shortages into the NHS."

However nursing staff will tell you there are not safe staffing levels on non-strike days - and they are sometimes unable to provide the level of service and care patients need."

Responding to the announcement by the Department for Health and Social Care, RCN Deputy Director for Nursing, Dr Nichola Ashby, said: "We have been campaigning on this and it is an important step in improving nursing students' ability to afford to fulfil their placements, but more radical changes are needed to address the shortage of nursing students."
