New Chair of RCN Council announced

The Royal College of Nursing is today pleased to announce Dee Sissons as the new Chair of Council.

Dee has experience as a Registered Nurse spanning four decades across the acute, commissioning and charity sectors. She has recently taken up the position of Chief Executive Officer at Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, having previously been Executive Director of Nursing for Marie Curie for four years.

Whilst at Marie Curie, Dee worked with the RCN to support the development of policies around competences for medicines management, and national policy on end of life care.

Dee Sissons said:

“I am honoured to be elected to this role by my colleagues on Council. Nursing continues to face challenges and they are ones we are determined to meet.

“With health and care at the top of the national debate and the political agenda I am determined that the voice of nursing is heard at the very highest level.

“We will continue to fight to ensure this continues and will stand our corner for nurses and nursing to improve their working conditions and employment rights.

“As we head toward the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife the RCN will keep up the pressure as we campaign to ensure nurses, wherever they work, are able to provide safe and effective care for all of their patients.”

Dame Donna Kinnair, Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing said:

“I would like to congratulate Dee on her election to Chair of Council. Nursing continues to face incredible challenges and with health at the heart of political agenda I am sure Council will carry on the fight for our members ensuring their voices are heard at the highest level.

“I would like to that thank our outgoing Chair, Sue Warner, for her dedicated service in leading Council through some very challenging times.

“It is a true credit to her leadership that nursing remains at the heart of the national debate.”

Dave Dawes, member for the North West has been re-elected as Chair of the Finance & Investment Committee and Honorary Treasurer.
