Regina Tavengwa 13 Jan 2025

This blog highlights my experience as an RCN steering committee member. This will inform other RCN members who may want to participate in future and to cascade information with colleagues who may otherwise not be aware of RCN forums and the work done by members.

My experience as an RCN ophthalmic steering committee member has been incredibly impactful and rewarding, both professionally and personally. It is clear that despite the challenges of balancing a full-time job with the commitments of this role, the benefits have far outweighed the difficulties.

The key highlights of my involvement such as representing the RCN at external meetings, contributing to national consultations, and influencing national policies demonstrate my active participation in shaping the future of nursing and ophthalmic practice. The opportunity to be part of the planning committee for the ophthalmic annual strategy, including setting the annual conference agenda and reviewing related documents, highlights my significant role in guiding the direction of the profession with topics such as implementation of the safe staffing tool. My influence on clinical practice and advanced practice, leading to national policy changes, underscores the powerful impact of the forum in shaping the field.

Moreover, the personal and professional benefits are profound. The experience has provided valuable networking opportunities with like-minded individuals, creating a platform to disseminate important information. I have not only contributed to the growth of nursing in ophthalmology but also had a direct influence on creating better working environments, supporting nursing professionals, and ultimately enhancing patient care.

My experience in the past year showcases a perfect blend of advocacy, leadership, and collaboration, making a real difference for patients, professionals, and the healthcare community at large. My enthusiasm to contribute to a collective effort that drives positive change in the healthcare system was indeed supported by becoming a committee member.
