Hi! I’m Josef and this is my experience of the RCN Prince of Wales Nursing Cadet Scheme
As soon as I heard about the scheme, I immediately contacted Sara Gilpin, from the college, to find out more as I’m so passionate about nursing and knew that this would be a great opportunity. I was definitely right about that.
It was such an amazing experience from start to finish; I’ve met new people and formed many friendships along the way. I would say that I’m more confident in talking to others now than I would have been before. The staff that organised and ran the programme were incredibly kind, accommodating and made us all feel so welcome, just as if we were part of the team. Having the red polos definitely helped with that.
I’ve learned quite so much invaluable information that I will definitely be applying in my academic studies as well as with employment. It was an eye-opening experience especially when working with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS); it was surreal to be present in their emergency operator room seeing firsthand the care that is provided around the clock.
The ‘classroom’ learning was enjoyable as it was very interactive which made it so much easier to learn. Especially learning about teamwork and communication, with the interactions we could see how effective we could be.
My favourite experience would be going to Helicopter Emergency Medical Services/Hazardous Area Response Team (HEMS/HART) headquarters as we got to see the air ambulance and experiment with all the gear that’s used. It’s not often you can say that to someone.
I would definitely recommend the scheme to anyone the next time it is available as it’s an experience you won’t forget.
