This year it has been great to get out to meet with many of you, in your workplaces, at RCN Congress and at RCN London events. In London it has been a busy year and we have a lot to celebrate:
- Supporting and working with members is our priority. This year alone the RCN London team have opened over 1700 cases.
- We congratulated 22 worthy Rising Stars, with winners from across London. I’m so proud of the incredible work members are doing for their patients, their colleagues, and for the wider nursing profession.
- Here is just one example of a great win for internationally educated nursing staff in the capital.
Some things have changed, others have not
This year we have seen political change with a new Labour government and promises to “fix” our broken NHS. A new 10-year plan is expected next year, and the RCN has been clear what is needed – significant investment in nursing. The RCN will be submitting evidence to the consultation and we want to hear from you about the changes you think are needed to inform our position.
If you work in the NHS, you’ll know it’s been another year of intense and sustained pressure. When I am out and about visiting workplaces across London, members tell me there is no such thing as winter pressures anymore - it’s now all year round.
The rise of corridor care
Treating patients in corridors, in utility rooms or in other unacceptable spaces is becoming the new norm. We’re calling this new epidemic corridor care, and the RCN is taking a leading role in calling this out, so watch this space for more action.
What about the independent sector?
We are working hard to improve working conditions for our members in the independent sector. Our new Employment Standards for Independent Health and Social Care Sectors will be a game changer, and our Independent Health and Social Care Lead for London, Millie Simms, is doing fantastic work for members in the capital.
Our focus for 2025
Securing Fair Pay for members is top of our agenda. That’s why we have pulled out of the Pay Review Body process and demanded direct negotiations with Government. But we can’t win without you, our members, getting involved. We need everyone to join the fight for fair pay, and you can start by taking 2 minutes (or less) to write to your MP.
Equity, diversity and inclusion is my other big priority next year and rolling out the RCN’s new strategy in London. My team and I want to make real headway in tackling discrimination in the capital.
