From Clinical Nurse to Nurse Leader: My Journey as a Dedicated Nursing Home Manager

Connie Mitchell 21 Jun 2024

Hello, I'm Connie Mitchell, a dedicated nursing home manager of a 71-bed Nursing Home.

My journey in healthcare has been both challenging and immensely rewarding. As an experienced senior nurse, my passion for providing safe and effective person-centred care and my desire to lead brought me to this role, which I cherish and take immense pride in.

My journey began with a strong foundation in nursing, which was enhanced when I attended the RCN Leadership and Management Development programme. This program transformed my leadership style, equipping me with the confidence and skills to push myself professionally. It was a transformative experience that revealed my potential in healthcare leadership and my capacity to drive change.

Starting as a nurse manager in a 33-bed nursing home, I developed my governance and team leadership skills. These early experiences were crucial, laying the groundwork for my current position. Today, I oversee a larger home with 71 beds, guiding my team to deliver person-centred care that is compassionate, knowledgeable, and highly skilled.

In my current role, I am responsible for the governance of our nursing home, ensuring that we maintain the highest standards of care. Leading a team of dedicated professionals, I strive to foster a nurturing environment that feels like home for our patients. Our collaborative approach involves working closely with patients, their families, and multidisciplinary teams to foster a sense of belonging and comfort.

At the heart of our care philosophy is compassion. Every resident is treated with kindness and respect, which is reflected in everything we do. Our team is committed to delivering person-centred care, focusing on each resident's individual needs and preferences.

Working in the Independent Sector has been the most enriching experience of my nursing career. This sector offers flexibility that is particularly beneficial for those with family commitments, making balancing professional and personal responsibilities easier. Moreover, the Independent Sector provides ample opportunities for career progression, allowing nurses to grow and advance professionally.

My career course is a testament to the opportunities available in this sector. From a registered nurse, I advanced to a clinical sister, then to an acting manager, followed by a nurse manager, and finally, to my current position as a senior nursing home manager of a large home. This journey has been incredibly fulfilling, and I am fortunate to work alongside a team that shares my vision of providing exemplary person-centred care.

My role's most rewarding aspect is witnessing my team’s growth and development. One example concerns one of the two deputy managers integral to delivering safe and effective person-centred care. One of them began their career as a Nursing Support Worker and has progressed through dedication and hard work to deputy manager. Their journey is a testament to the supportive and nurturing environment we strive to create in our nursing home.

I highly recommend a career in the Independent Sector. It is flexible, supportive, and rewarding, offering continuity of safe and effective person-centred care that allows us to build meaningful and lasting relationships with our patients. In our nursing home, we become an extension of our patients' families, and this sense of belonging is incredibly fulfilling.

Spending time with our patients is the highlight of my day. The patients are the reason for our roles, and their stories, wisdom, and resilience inspire us daily. Each interaction reminds us why we do what we do, and it fuels our commitment to providing the best possible care.

In my journey from clinical nurse to senior nursing home manager, I have grown, learned new skills, and gained immense satisfaction. Leading a team dedicated to compassionate, person-centred care is a privilege and a responsibility I am honoured to uphold. For anyone considering a career in nursing within the Independent Sector, I can declare that it is a path filled with opportunities, support, and immense rewards.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. Together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of those we care for, creating a home away from home for our beloved patients.
