Claire Sutton 21 Feb 2025

Claire Sutton, our Head of Independent Health and Social Care (IHSC), discusses our commitment to empowering nurses through professional learning programmes and initiatives.

In today’s rapidly evolving nursing landscape, leadership is much more than a title—it’s the driving force behind care and innovation.

At the Royal College of Nursing, we are committed to nurturing leadership among nurses, including for those working in the Independent Health and Social Care (IHSC) sectors. Through our targeted professional learning programmes and initiatives, we are proud to empower nurses.

At the heart of our commitment to developing nursing leadership is the RCN Institute of Nursing Excellence. One of its flagship initiatives is the Nursing Leadership Academy.

Nursing Leadership Academy – Lead the Way

This academy is designed to empower existing and aspiring nursing leaders to drive positive change in health care. It is a vibrant platform that focuses on:

  • Providing leadership development programmes for nursing staff at different career stages.
  • Establishing mentorship initiatives connecting experienced and aspiring nursing leaders.
  • Providing resources and support for nurses in leadership positions.
  • Offering training on ethical decision making and effective leadership strategies, navigating internal and external political factors.
  • Advocating for diversity and inclusion in nursing leadership.
