As Black History Month comes to a close, it’s easy to think that our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) can take a backseat until next year. But let’s not park these vital principles for 11 months! Instead, let’s celebrate the incredible achievements of those who embody EDI every day in their work. I want to shine a light on our three IHSC Rising Star winners who received their awards at the recent London Black History Month event: Aila Evangelista, Prachi Xettigar, and Tracy Nanquil. Their dedication and innovative approaches are shining examples of what happens when we prioritize inclusion in healthcare.

Aila Evangelista: A Champion for Quality Care

Aila, an Internationally Educated Nurse at Atfield House Care Home (Barchester), is a force of nature when it comes to providing innovative and quality care. Her journey exemplifies continuous improvement and collaboration. Aila is always looking to enhance her skills, evidenced by her independent enrolment in the Skin Care Champion Programme. Her commitment led her to win the JWC Innovation in Care Home Award!

But her impact doesn’t stop there. As a Learning and Development Representative for the RCN, she actively engages with her peers, ensuring they have access to vital resources and training. Aila’s participation in the Care Innovation Challenge further highlights her dedication to improving patient care, showing us that the pursuit of excellence never truly ends.

Tracy Nanquil: Innovator in Cancer Services Education

In her role as Clinical Practice Educator at The London Clinic, Tracy has made significant strides in improving educational and training opportunities for Cancer Services. Since joining in April 2024, she has co-delivered numerous training sessions, focusing on creating an agile interprofessional workforce that can provide comprehensive care.

Tracy’s achievements are remarkable, including her leadership in the Cancer Services Competency Framework Review and the development of ‘snack and learn’ sessions on safe management practices. Her dedication to fostering open communication and collaboration ensures that all voices are heard, regardless of role or rank. By prioritizing staff wellbeing and patient safety, Tracy exemplifies what it means to be a transformational leader in nursing.

A Call to Action: Keep the Momentum Going!

As we celebrate these amazing individuals, let’s not forget the broader impact of EDI in our nursing practice. We have the power to create a workplace that not only values diversity but thrives on it. Whether it’s through mentoring, advocating for inclusive policies, or simply supporting a colleague, every action counts.

Let’s take inspiration from Aila, Prachi, and Tracy, and continue to champion equity, diversity, and inclusion in our daily lives.

Together, we can transform patient care and create a healthcare environment where everyone feels valued and supported.

Keep shining, everyone!
