Caught up in Congress

Cat Gibbons 10 Jul 2024

Cat Gibbons shares her insights of Congress as a first time attendee.

I had applied for Congress on a whim in the depths of winter, thinking ‘that would be nice’. I had then promptly forgotten about it until I got an email confirming that I had a place as a voting member for the RCN Oxfordshire Branch.

Congress was approaching and I was starting to feel slightly nervous. I didn’t know anyone, I was unsure as to what would be expected of me and what going to Congress would mean. I needn’t have worried about any of it! Oxfordshire Branch members Michael, Millie, Sally and Denise were so welcoming and by the end of the first day had made me feel so comfortable.

Congress was inspiring and for the first time in a long time, made me proud of being a nurse. It was such a joyous experience and celebration of all the hard work that we do. I listened to some debates which really made me think. We had some amazing key note speakers who were inspiring and spoke on topics which really mattered.

I remember on the first day of Congress saying to the others that I probably wouldn’t stand up during a debate or a resolution. However, by the end of the second day, I had spoken on a topic that I feel extremely passionate about and came down from the stage feeling proud that I had contributed.

Congress was also about meeting others and there were lots of social events arranged. I met lots of fabulous people over the four days.

I came away from Congress feeling inspired, uplifted and ready to make change where I work. I had never really thought about being more active in our local branch but, since Congress, I am really keen to take part and am also thinking about becoming a health and safety rep.

My advice when you see the email that will come around about Congress is to apply!
