Bladder and Bowel Forum Conference 2024

This one-day event provides an opportunity to meet the committee and other healthcare professionals

Join us at the RCN's Bladder and Bowel Forum Conference 2024.  Bladder and bowel continence is a fundamental aspect central to all of us and our dignity. For those who experience bladder and bowel leakage (incontinence) accessing healthcare advice, education and treatment is critical to ensure symptoms are improved wherever possible and well managed where cure is not possible.

The RCN Bladder and Bowel Forum includes nurses with interests in all aspects of continence care. The steering committee provided a series of webinars over the last 18 months to focus on key aspects to educate nursing and care staff from all backgrounds. Each webinar focussed on a different aspect of continence and are available to watch at any time through the forum webpage.

We were keen to ensure the webinars provided comprehensive advice and education that nursing staff from all clinical areas and settings could take into their practice to improve the offering for people with incontinence.

Following on from this series the committee are providing a brand-new conference to extend the education surrounding the fundamentals of continence care.

This one-day event on 15th November 09:00-16:30 provides an opportunity to meet the committee and other healthcare professionals, explore the exhibition of products to support continence management, and learn about varying aspects of bladder and bowel leakage. By the end of the day, you will be able to:

  • perform baseline continence assessments for patients with bladder and bowel issues
  • utilise resources to diagnose and plan better continence care
  • implement preliminary management of continence in order to improve a patient’s quality of life
  • determine which product to utilise for a continence issue (“Puzzle by Products”)
  • understand how Laxatives work, and what they taste like
  • identify problems with catheters and resolve them
  • evaluate effectiveness of the continence care plan and change or update, as needed or indicated.

We are also honoured to have Ms Jacq Emkes providing our keynote session providing first hand insights on the lived experience of the continence journey. Jacq is a passionate patient advocate working with national bodies and groups to change how continence is viewed and prioritised to improve outcomes for all. Nikki Cotterill

Professor of Nursing in Continence Care, University of the West of England, Bristol

Nikki Cotterill is Professor of Nursing in Continence Care at UWE Bristol, Continence Lead for North Bristol NHS Trust and Director of the Bladder and Bowel Confidence Health Integration Team (BABCON), providing a systemwide focus on improving the landscape for people with bladder and bowel leakage.

Nikki leads a portfolio of projects to improve outcomes for people with incontinence and has focussed primarily on projects that bridge the gap between people with bladder and bowel leakage and the evidence base that can support them. This has enabled her to conduct projects in health and social care settings exploring self-help, educational needs of individuals and staff, continence promotion in non-traditional settings such as community pharmacy, and inequality in continence care.

Nikki works closely with patients and the public to ensure her research is informed by lived experiences and has potential for real-world impact. She is a passionate advocate for nurse-led research.
