FAQs: Macmillan Cancer Support Proposal 2024

Find answers below to frequently asked questions about Macmillan Cancer Support’s proposed pay structure and the RCN member consultation.

Section 1: About the proposal

The consultation covers RCN members who are employed by Macmillan Cancer Support in its Direct Services Team.

The RCN has an agreement with your employer Macmillan Cancer Support to negotiate on your behalf on specific terms and conditions of your employment. This includes grade and salary structure.

Macmillan Cancer Support have been negotiating with us on what it calls a ‘reward review consultation’. Macmillan Cancer Support has put forward a proposal to us. We’re now formally asking affected RCN members for their views on this proposal.

Macmillan Cancer Support is proposing a new single pay structure for their staff. Macmillan carried out a data validation exercise to decide how roles in the organisation are aligned in the proposed structure.

Macmillan Cancer Support has provided a letter and slides that give details of the proposal and information on where each role sits within the proposed structure. It’s important that you read these documents before taking part in the consultation.

The proposed changes, as highlighted on slide 3 of the slides are:

  • The Cancer Information Nurse Specialist role was a salary band 7 but it is now a salary band 6
  • The Senior Cancer Information Nurse Specialist role was a salary band 5 and remains at salary band 5
  • The Cancer Information Development Nurse role was a salary band 7 and is now a salary band 6
  • The Senior Information Development Nurse role was a salary band 5 and remains a salary band 5
  • The Service Knowledge Specialist (Clinical) role was a salary band 6 and is now a salary band 5
  • The Service Manager (Clinical Information & Support) role was a salary band 4 and remains a salary band 4
  • The Service Manager – Clinical Information Development role was a salary band 4 and remains a salary band 4

Macmillan Cancer Support says that it believes the proposal offers greater earning potential for members in nursing roles.

Macmillan Cancer Support also says that it believes the proposal is better for all nursing roles, expect for the Senior Information Development Nurse role and Senior Cancer Information Nurse Specialist role in the current London nurse pay level 5. However, it says it will protect the earning potential for staff members in these roles.

Macmillan Cancer Support says that this proposal does not affect your base salary, which will stay the same. Base pay is basic salary excluding additional payments such as premium payments, on-call supplements etc.

It has also confirmed that if you are currently below the bottom of your new salary band, you’ll be uplifted to the bottom of your new band.

The employer has told us that the only potential detriment is that earning potential in a group described in the letter has been reduced, this has been mitigated by the employer by providing pay protection.
