Workforce education: How well are we representing people with dark skin tones in clinical skills teaching?

05 Jun 2024, 17:45 - 18:30

  • 1A, ICC Wales, Coldra Woods, Newport, NP18 1HQ
Hosted by: RCN Education Forum

Collaboration: RCN Advance Practice Forum, General Practice Nurses Forum, CYP Specialist Forum, Students Committee, The Clinical Educators Network UK

It is recognised that current tools used for clinical patient assessment and reference images are often based on Caucasian skin tones. Research suggests that a lack of diversity within education content negatively affects confidence and knowledge which impacts upon patient outcomes. This can occur across the breadth of nursing fields for example: recognition of jaundice in neonates, inaccurate pulse oximetry readings and pressure injury.

This interactive workshop is aimed at those interested in inclusivity within clinical skills training and recognising the impact upon patient safety and person-centred care.

By the end of the learning session, delegates will have:

  • explored current literature and resources regarding representation of people with dark skin tones in clinical skills teaching
  • discussed current best practice, areas for improvement and confidence in including skin tone diversity in clinical skills teaching
  • reflected on experiences of inclusivity and non-discriminatory practice within clinical skill teaching.
This interactive session will be of interest to members from all fields and all levels of practice, whether in the NHS or independent sector.
