Understanding sepsis: what’s new and what’s different?

Sepsis affects far too many people. It is estimated that 918,000 adults are admitted to hospital per year and 66,096 die in the UK. We know that if sepsis is identified and treated early, some sepsis-related deaths may be preventable. 

The aim of the session will be to provide an overview on sepsis discussing the definition of sepsis, epidemiology and highlight current challenges and issues managing patient with sepsis. The Statement on the Initial Antimicrobial Treatment of Sepsis (v2.0) by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) and NICE guidelines provides new recommendations on clinical management of sepsis which will also be discussed.

The session will:

• provide an update on the definition and current epidemiology
• present the current challenges around managing sepsis in clinical settings
• highlight the new recommendations from AoMRC and NICE on managing patients with sepsis.

This session is open to all health care professionals.
