Global nursing and midwifery workforce - an endless supply?
04 Jun 2024, 17:45 - 18:30
Collaboration: International Committee UK, Diaspora/international nursing and midwifery organisations UK
The nursing and midwifery workforce is a global issue due to the global shortage of nurses. This session will cover the over-reliance of the UK on international recruited nurses and midwives. The NHS achieved its 50,000 nursing recruitment target in 2023, however over 90% of these nurses are from overseas.
36 UK diaspora nursing and midwifery organisations play a pivotal role in supporting internationally educated nursing staff through advocacy, education, pastoral care and using their political voice.
This session will stimulate thinking and debate on the vulnerability of source countries and also look at evidence which highlights that the health and well-being of migrant nurses is variable and they can experience poor working conditions which impact on patient care. Aiming to inform attendees of national and global issues and enable attendees to lobby their organisations and the government, the session will also provide insight and information on the importance of equity and diversity when managing the workforce.
Aimed at all nursing staff across the NHS and independent health and social sector.
