RCN Council Review: the case for change
RCN Boards, branches, forums, committees and other networks are being asked for their views on the report and recommendations from the Council Review Group.
An independent Group was tasked with reviewing how Council and its committees work with other parts of the governance and representative structure, the Chief Executive & General Secretary and other senior staff. Its aim was to see how well the RCN’s governance structure enables effective governance in today’s rapidly changing world; how it supports our dual role as a trade union and royal college; and how well it represents our members.
The review follows changes to the RCN’s legal structure in 2010 and a review of RCN Boards in 2012. The main elements of the present governance structure have remained the same for almost 40 years.

We are encouraging RCN members to provide feedback on the Council Review Group's recommendations.
You may wish to consider the following questions:
- Do you agree with the findings of the review?
- Do you agree that the proposals live up to our values as a member organisation, royal college and trade union?
- Do you believe the proposed changed are sufficient to address the findings of the review, and if not, what else should Council do?

What happens next?
Changes to the composition of Council have be agreed by the membership at the RCN annual general meeting (AGM) on 21 June 2016. Please come along to hear the discussion and have your say.
Council has the authority to make other changes proposed in the Review Group's report. It will take into account your feedback when making those decisions after the AGM.
