eVisa
Member's guide to the eVisa system
Travel update
The Government has announced that all BRPs expiring 31st of December 2024 will be accepted as evidence of permission to travel to the UK by airlines and other carriers until 31st March 2025. You must continue to carry your BRP when travelling until then.
Members will still remain subject to the usual immigration checks and requirements.
We still advise members to register for the eVisa immediately if they have not already done so.
The eVisa
The eVisa is an online record of your immigration status, and the conditions attached to it.
It will contain similar information to that on your Biometric Residence Permit and it will be accessible via your UKVI account. You must create a UKVI account to access your eVisa.
Updating to the new eVisa does not affect your immigration status or the conditions of your leave.
The eVisa is replacing the following documents:
- biometric residence permits (BRP)
- biometric residence cards (BRC)
- passport endorsements, such as indefinite leave to enter wet ink stamps
- vignette stickers in passports, such as entry clearance or visa vignette
Members with status under the EU settlement scheme already have an eVisa.
Sign up for the eVisa
You will need to create a UKVI account to access your eVisa and share your immigration status. Creating an account is free.
Please remember to keep the information on your account up to date, including address changes and document changes.
You will need your BRP number to create your account, you can still use your latest BRP even if it has expired. If you do not have a BRP please see the guidance below.
Your personal information with the eVisa system
- You can access your information any time;
- Third parties will be able to access your information for a limited time via the view and prove service. Please see the guidance below for more information on the service;
- UKVI will also share your information with some government departments and other public authorities. This will reduce the need for you to interact with some online services.

All BRPs will expire on the 31st of December 2024.
Your leave might expire before or after 31/12/2024. Please refer to the expiry date stated in your decision letter/email.
- If your BRP has been lost or stolen: you can use your passport number and visa application reference to sign up. You can no longer request a replacement BRP card.
- If you prove your status via a different type of document (e.g. vignette or wet ink stamp): you can still create a UKVI account as long as you have a valid passport.
- If you do not have a document to prove your right: please check if you are eligible for the Windrush Scheme.
- If you have a BRC: you may be eligible to make a late application to the EU Settlement Scheme. You will not be able to travel until you have obtained proof of your status.
Everyone needs their own UKVI account. If your child is under 18 and unable to create and manage their own account, a parent, guardian or responsible adult should do this for them.
If you notice your details are wrong, or you cannot see your eVisa details once you create your UKVI account, you should report an error to UKVI.
You will need to generate a share code through the view and prove service.
You can use this service to prove your status to employers, landlords and other third parties.
Share codes give third parties limited access to information on immigration status, you can get a new share code whenever you need one – free of charge.
- Your eVisa is registered to your passport number, so remember to keep your details up to date! An out of date passport number, address or contact information may result in you being refused boarding and/or unnecessary delays.
- If you have updated your passport information on your eVisa account but have not yet received confirmation that your account has been updated, remember to carry your old document (the one still linked to your UKVI account) when travelling as well as your new passport.
- Before travelling remember to generate a share code as your carrier may ask for it.
- If your BRP expired 31st December 2024, you should still carry it when travelling until 31st March 2025. This is subject to change, remember to check the latest updates before traveling.
Until 31st March 2025 you will need to carry your BRP with you, including when traveling, even if you have already registered for the eVisa.
We recommend keeping your BRP safe as it may help with future applications, and for your own personal records.
You should follow the usual visa application process and there will be information on creating your UKVI account during the application process.
