Don't miss out! Bookings are open․
The NHS spends millions of pounds each year on hospital admissions and prescriptions for continence issues which would not be required if the right management was initiated sooner.
Raising staff awareness and enhancing skills, along with more resources dedicated to managing bladder and bowel conditions, would lead both to financial savings for the NHS and an improved quality of life for patients.
Who is this event aimed at?
General Nurses, student nurses and support workers from general, acute, psychiatric and elderly wards, care homes, social care, prisons and the community.
Learning outcomes
Following the nursing process, attendees will leave this conference with the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the importance of continence care.
They will be able to:
• to perform baseline continence assessments for patients with bladder and bowel issues
• to be able to utilise resources to diagnose and plan better continence care
• to implement preliminary management of continence in order to improve a patient’s quality of life
• to determine which product to utilise for a continence issue (“Puzzle by Products”)
• understand how Laxatives work, and what they taste like
• identify problems with catheters and resolve them
• evaluate effectiveness of the continence care plan and change or update, as needed or indicated.

Keynote speaker: Jacqueline Emkes, Patient advocate
Talk title: Urine luck
Biography: Jacqueline Emkes ( Jacq) qualified as a Chartered Accountant and then changed careers to teaching Secondary Maths and Accounting. After a surgical accident in 2009, Jacqueline has been through various urological procedures for complex bladder dysfunction including: boari flap, nephrectomy, colposuspension and autologous rectus fascial colposacropexy. In addition stents, nephrostomies and indwelling, suprapubic and disposable catheters. Infections have been complicated by resistant bacteria and allergic reactions to some antibiotics. The infections have caused rapid spinal degeneration. This has meant a spinal fusion in 2011, spinal injections and a spinal implant have been necessary. Subsequently, making the decision to retire from teaching and try to raise awareness of bladder problems to improve service provision. It is important to ensure that patients are involved in research to ensure that research is done ‘by’ patients rather than ‘to’ patients. Benign conditions are low priority - the Cinderella of the NHS. Jacq is desperately trying to change that.
